'God! So full up," I said to myself after eating so much delicious food. I was sitting with my back straight and my eyes closed waiting for the food to go down. A few seconds later I heard someone say "Gor, don’t sleep yet. The last order is on the way now. Wake up and try it, I bet you will like it for sure." I opened my eyes to take a look. It was my aunt that said it.
I asked her, "What is it?" She answered, "Watch your back, it’s coming". I turned around and saw a waiter standing behind me. I moved to the left a little so he could serve me a bowl of steaming soup. It smelled very nice though I wasn’t sure what it was. I licked my lips and scooped up some meat and soup. I was about to put it in my mouth, but I suddenly stopped and took a closer look. It was a bowl of "shark fin soup!"
My aunt saw me put the spoon down so she asked me, "Aren’t you going to eat it?" I replied, "Not sure." She gave me a curious look and said, "You really liked to eat it when you were a kid, remember? Don’t you like it anymore?"
I didn’t answer her questions but I asked her, "Do you know what the fishermen do to a shark when they catch it? She replied, "No, why?" Then I said, "OK, listen to what I am going to tell you. You might not want to eat this shark fin soup anymore". I took a sip of water then told them what I knew.
"Millions of sharks are killed every year just for a bowl of soup. The number of sharks in the sea is now becoming less and less. This is because shark fin soup is so popular. It also costs a lot of money. The most expensive bowl can cost as much as $100. Do you believe that? And that is why every fisherman wants to catch sharks and get their fins.
"After they catch a shark, they cut the fin off, right? Most sharks won’t die straight away; they are still alive even though they have no fin. Do you know what they do to the rest of the shark after they have cut off the most expensive part? They throw the shark back in the water! But will that shark be OK? Will the fin grow back? The answer is NO. The shark will slowly die. Those fishermen know that shark meat isn’t worth much, so they throw the rest of the shark away to make more room in the boat."
I told my family that on my web site I have asked people to stop eating shark fin soup. They said that they didn’t know that before and that they were interested to learn more. My brother said to me that he didn’t care that much about the boycott. I said to him, "Of course, you eat everything. That is why you are fat like this. Fatter than me!" Everyone laughed, but I didn’t. I know that he is only 12 years old so he doesn’t really understand.
Even though I just told them this story, they continued eating the soup. They said that they would eat it because they didn’t want to waste the money and anyway, they couldn’t do anything about it. The shark is already dead and if they didn’t eat the soup then that shark died for nothing. They are right about that but if I eat it, that means I am supporting those people that killed this shark. What should I do? Eat it or not eat it? If you were me, what would you do?
Before I could make my decision, my fat younger brother reached over and started eating my bowl of shark fin soup! Oh well, he made my decision for me. But anyway, if he didn’t do that I am sure I wouldn’t have eaten it because I want to support the boycott.
